SAVE OUR WAVES MALDIVES

PROTECT THE PLACES YOU LOVE

Waves all across the Maldives are being threatened and outright destroyed by rapid coastal development and infrastructure.

A short video (2.42 Minutes) on Save Our Waves Maldives https://youtu.be/vAdsLhQMbn0

Save The Waves is supporting local surfers, as well as an international team, to ensure that the Maldivian Government protect their wave resources and prevent private interests from destroying surf ecosystems.

THE THREAT

In the past few years, there has been an alarming trend as high end tourism and infrastructure development has led to damaged or outright destroyed surf ecosystems. Local partners on the ground have documented dozens of known surf spots that have either disappeared completely due to development, or are critically threatened by an ongoing project or construction.

WHAT THEY ARE DOING
Save The Waves and campaign partners are lobbying the Maldivian government to protect surf ecosystems and wave resources.

They are demanding that waves and their biological, social and economic value be considered in Environmental Impact Assessments of potential development projects, integrated into Marine Spatial Planning and Marine Protected Area processes, and be restored if they have been damaged by a project.

ONE OF THE GREATEST WAVES IN THE MALDIVES IS UNDER SERIOUS THREAT. February 9, 2021, Written by Tony Butt | Originally Published by Magicseaweed

One place where this has happened is a surf spot called Chickens. Chickens is a left hander that breaks off a small island called Kuda Villigili in the northeast of the North Malé Atoll. It is one of the most famous waves in the Maldives. It works between around two and eight feet, contains tube sections and is one of the longest waves in the Maldives. It is not a difficult wave to surf, almost always breaks in the same place and works at all stages of the tide.

Save the Waves has launched a campaign (HERE). The campaign is designed to raise public awareness globally, and to show the politicians and developers how much a surf break means to surfers around the world. Raising public awareness about this issue is vital.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP!

If Chickens is saved, it will be the first time in the Maldives that the value of a surfing wave will have been recognised, even if only for the pragmatic reason that it brings money into the economy. If, on the other hand, Chickens isn’t saved, it will still go down in history as an unfortunate case that could have so easily been avoided.

So please sign the petition (HERE) and put it on your social media.
