In 2012, at the age of 41, Sara Blakely became the world's youngest female self-made billionaire.
She is an inspiration for all women who are thinking of giving up on their dreams due to challenges and failures!
“I could have easily sat back and continued to say, ‘One day.’ I could have kept dreaming, hoping, and wishing. But instead, I started doing it, and one day became day one, 20 years ago. And that’s what made all the difference.” Sarablakely Instagram.
If you already didn't know, Sara Treleaven Blakely is an American businesswoman and philanthropist. She is the founder of Spanx, an American intimate apparel company with pants and leggings, founded in Atlanta, Georgia. In 2012, Blakely was named in Time magazine's "Time 100" annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.
So actually how did she reinvent the girdle to spanx footless pantyhose?
Sara Blakely, founder and CEO of SPANX, shares her story in the Tony Robbins interview, how failure has been a catalyst to her success – and how she uses it to learn, grow and see the upside in everything.
“It was 1998. I had spent all my hard-earned money on this one pair of cream pants that just hung there in my closet!”
“I wanted to wear it so badly but I wanted to wear them without my panty lines showing and that’s when I decided to cut the feet out of control top pantyhose!”
“It did well under my white pants, and so I went to this party. Everybody complimented on how fabulous I looked, I felt great, I had no panty lines, I looked thinner and smoother, but them pantyhose kept rolling up my legs all night”.
“Every girl and woman should have this privilege – I told myself!”
“But how in the world am I gonna change the way women's butts look better in clothes with only $5,000 in my savings. Besides I'd just moved out of my mom's house, and I was dating a loser”.
“Imagine me trying to present my idea to men, so that I could patent it, you could see me trying to explain to them that this was gonna be an idea that everyone would love”.
“I'd never taken a business class, I'd never worked in fashion or retail. I'd actually been selling fax machines door-to-door for seven years, since graduating from college!”
“I spent evenings researching hosiery in a college library and eventually developed a foundation undergarment for women”.
“I knew that I wanted my package to be red, and bold, and different because everything on the market then was beige, and white, and gray, and had the same half-naked woman that had been on every package for the last 40 years”.
“My product got called “Spanx” because it sounded cheeky and I also heard that products that ended in the letter “X” tended to do well”.
“Today Spanx has factories in 15 countries and we are really glad that it keeps a large part of the world’s population, including both men & women satisfied!”
